What is an IBCLC?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. IBCLC's are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, Inc. (
www.iblce.org) under the direction of the U.S. National Commission for Certifying Agencies. IBCLC's work in a wide variety of health care settings, including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics and private practice.

Reasons why you may need the services of an IBCLC:

1. Your Baby was supplemented with formula after birth.
2. Baby was born prematurely and unable to initially breastfeed.
3. Your Baby has experienced a slower weight gain.
4. You are experiencing a painful latch.
5. You believe you may have inadequate breastmilk production.
6. You need to pump to be able to return to work.

Breastmilk is the optimal choice for infant nutrition.
There are short and long-term health benefits for both the breastfeeding mother and the breastfed baby.

The following organizations all recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life:
